Are You a Listener or a Talker?
Think back to leaders you have known please. Did they have the ability to truly listen?
I bet they did. People we remember in a positive manner are people who listened with their eyes, heart and ears.
Being listened to makes us feel validated and respected. And who doesn't want that?
Who needs validation today? Go do it! You will reap respect and trust -- advocates.

Leader or Manager?
Which are you? Honestly, you need both depending on the situation. My intent and hopefully yours is to move towards more leadership.
As a frame of reference, leaders love people and inspiring them to be their best selves. Managers tend to like task and control -- things neat. There is nothing "neat" about dealing with people. Including me.

Faith not Fear
Apologies for falling off the face of postings.
Fascinating how life gives you what you need for your next level of growth even if we do not want it.
I thought I had this faith stuff down really well. The rest of my life the best.
Then life happens and you go into a spin of fear. The fear you thought you've let behind.
What do I do in fear? I either lash out or shut down. I tend nowadays to shut down knowing NO One deserves my fear attacks.
Which do you do? If you always remain in faith, tips would be greatly appreciated!

Gnawing Through Cement
Have you ever felt you were gnawing through cement to get heard? To feel appreciated? To count?
I have. A pattern instilled during childhood. And just when I think I have conquered it and moved forward, I get another opportunity to address it.
I have a client, you could have a boss or a board or a friend, that no matter how many loops you jump, it is never enough.
Just remember, you do not have to jump through hoops. Ask yourself, "What is this here to teach me?"
There are no wasted experiences.
Stay strong!

There are always options. At the least, you can change your attitude.

There seem to be several definitions of leadership. To make leadership more relevant to you, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
When I talk, do people listen?

Are people asking me to be their coach or mentor?

Direct is a Good Thing: Cruel is Not.
Being a coach and observer is fascinating. I keep learning from those I have the honor and privilege to coach.
Working with this one company, I noticed that the CEO was very direct. As his stress went up, his direct-ness which is good thing, became harsh and cruel.
When your stress goes up, does your candor become harsh?
If yes, would you want to be on the receiving end?
Do other's deserve your stress attack harshness?
Is harsh motivating?
Does harsh create a culture of trust?
How long will people give you the benefit of the doubt before shutting down?
There is always a choice!

Appreciation Counts
Have you received any appreciation and thanks lately?
Imagine how you would feel if you did receive a sincere thanks? Would you feel more energized? More engaged? Thankful? Ready to push forward regardless of external forces?
If you have a disengaged workforce, perhaps it is time to make the rounds or make a few calls to give your sincere thanks for his/her contribution. If you can't think of anything to appreciate, perhaps that is the reason for the disengagement.
Engage the heart and the rest happens!

Thriving Made Simple
I tend to make things complicated for myself; whereas I am great at simplifying things for my clients.
Just call me lucky! I am in San Diego preparing for a workshop. The client's organization is stuck in negativity. Negativity will shut a place down faster that the economic times.
As I came up with my slides for tomorrow's workshop, I made the wrap-up simple:
Be Happy and Thrive!
It always begins with us! We are far more powerful than we can imagine.

What's Diluting Your Effectiveness?
As a person and leader, everything counts. There are NO neutral actions! None!
I am off on a consulting/intervention assignment, the client's organization is stuck in negativity.
Negativity is a waste of precious energy! If you or your team or stuck in the blame game, festering and negativity, here's a few question to ask yourself:
How did I contribute to this situation?
Am I exhibiting blame and life is not fair or finding solutions?
One solution is to leave. Change the situation by speaking your truth in a way it is heard, see if action is taken if not, than change your attitude or leave. There must be a reason you are still there. Is it fear you won't find another position? Do you have student loans to pay-off? Whatever the reason, than stay with a good attitude. There are no victims.
I have soooo many more questions for you.
Start with these.

Our words have the power to energize any situation. I finally got it! When I use words like stepping stone instead of stumbling block, I shift my energy and find better solutions. When I use opportunities instead of obstacles I feel empowered, not weary.
Use your words wisely and create the life you want!
